The Antelope Valley Press web site

www.avpress.com is an extension of the Antelope Valley Press.

It is produced by the news staff with technical assistance from the Computer Services department using news and advertising content produced by the newspaper staff. The site is hosted by Quantum Networking Solutions of Palmdale.

Current classified ads are made available at 6 a.m. each day.

News content is posted each day at 9 a.m.

Answers to the most frequently asked questions about avpress.com may be found here.

Comment on the site may be sent by e-mail to compserv@avpress.com.

We've assembled some viewing tips to help you get the most out of your browser and our site.

Here are some of the design concepts behind the site:

Navigation aids

We've put indexes down the left side of the page. On most pages, the top group will actually be links to indexes farther down the page so you can jump, not scroll.

Color to help differentiate content

We've put the indexes over a peach background and text over white. Of course, if you have your browser set to override background colors with your own choices, you won't notice. If you are using a browser that does not allow color backgrounds in tables, you won't see the peach, either.

The actual color you will see depends on your monitor. Different monitors display colors differently. We've seen our peach range from a yellowish orange to a reddish orange on various monitors.

Size to help differentiate content

We've put indexes in smaller type, body text in larger type. If you have altered your browser to display larger type, you may see the index and the dateline go kind of funny. For the technically inclined, we are using font size 1 on the dateline under the Valley Press logo on the home page, font size 2 for the index and copyright notice and font size 4 for everything else.

Positions for banner ads

Several ad positions exist on the home page and inside pages.

The site is searchable

We've added several search indexes so you can find things quickly in the classifieds and in the news content. Check the home page index under "Search" for areas you can look into quickly. The search capability is provided by software from Excite (the same as the big Excite site you may go to already). Ours indexes just avpress.com. Theirs indexes the rest of the world. The software was installed and debugged for us by our web site host, Quantum Networking Solutions of Palmdale.

Viewing tips

We've tried to make the site as viewable as possible with as wide a variety of browsers as possible, but, if you want to see it the way we see it on one of our computers, here's how to set it up.

The home page is set up for a width of 600 pixels. The thin line below the Valley Press logo on the home page is 600 pixels wide. If you wish to see the page the same way as it is composed, pull the right side of your browser in until you can see the right end of the line plus a little white margin. You do not lose anything if your browser is set wider. If your monitor or browser are not set up for or capable of 600 pixels, the home page will still display correctly except the ad in the upper right corner may drop below the Valley Press logo or the ad may not be fully visible in which case you will have to scroll to the right to see the complete ad.

The page is composed with the browser's proportional font size set to 12 points. If you have your browser set to a smaller-size font, the index links down the left side may be hard to read. If your font is set larger, some items in the index may break into a second line. Nothing disastrous.
