BABBITT, Donald Oliver
BABBITT, Donald Oliver If you knew our Dad, you may not have known that he was a 'HERO'. Not just to us, but to the United States. He hardly ever talked about his accomplishments, but they were many. He was born October 6, 1928 and was one of 4 boys, born to Janet and William Babbitt, in St. Louis, Mo. He passed away May 21, 2014 in Lancaster, Calif. He will be forever loved, missed and respected by all that knew him. He enlisted in United States Navy, where he learned Electronics for 4 years. Dad married Peggy Jean Newsome in December 21, 1951, in Virginia. He worked at Cal Tech, Rockwell and Lockheed. Dad spent over 40 years in the Mercury, Gemini, Apollo and Space Shuttle programs in Florida and California. He was awarded the Medal for Exceptional Bravery, after he suffered severe burns on January 27, 1967, while attempting to rescue the astronauts during the Apollo 1 fire, which killed 3 astronauts. He is survived by Jeanne, his loving and devoted wife of 62 years; sons, Kenneth and Jeffrey; Daughters-in-law, Sue and Tina; grandsons, Christopher (Crystal), Jarrod, Darren (Stormey), Jeremy, and Deacon (Valerie); 3 great- grandchildren, Courtney and Sydney Kimmens, and Orin Donald Babbitt; 3 brothers, William, Dale and Richard. Don and his wife volunteered at the Lancaster Library at their Book Sales for many years. Don is preceded in death by his parents and his son, Glenn in 2013. A memorial will be held at 11 am, Saturday, May 31, 2014, at Grace Chapel Church, 44648 15th St West, Lancaster.
