DEBRY, Robert W.
DeBry, Robert W. Robert passed away peacefully in his sleep on January 17, 2014 in Sahuarita, Arizona after a lengthy battle with cancer. He was born on January 11, 1927 in Salt Lake City, Utah, the son of Dutch immigrants Gerrit and Pieternella DeBry. He was the tenth of eleven children born to the couple. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II on the minesweeper the U.S.S. Observer. Robert made three trips across the Pacific on the U.S.S. Bronx to pick up troops and bring them home after the war ended. He married Irene Shimek on November 7, 1947 in Los Angeles, CA. In 1954 he began his career as a Deputy Sheriff in the Los Angeles area and was transferred to Lancaster in 1961. Robert retired in July, 1981 after 27 years of service. He was an avid golfer who loved to camp, fish and travel the world with family and friends. He lived in the Quartz Hill and Lancaster area for over 35 years until moving to St. George, UT and then to Sahuarita, AZ in 2009. Robert will be remembered as a devoted and faithful Christian who loved his family and was an inspiration to all. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Irene DeBry; a sister, Marjorie Tash and brother, Grant DeBry; three children, Mike DeBry (Dayle), Steve DeBry (Diana) and Marlene Hussman; five grandchildren, Darrell Hussman, Weston DeBry (Jessica), Dustin DeBry, Garrett DeBry, and Brett DeBry; four great-grandchildren, Payton, Preston and Kierra Hussman and Holley DeBry. Interment with military honors was held at the Evergreen Cemetery in Tucson, AZ on January 21, 2014.
