WILLIAMS, James Floris
WILLIAMS, James 'Jim' Floris Nov. 3, 1920 - Jan. 3, 2014 James 'Jim' Floris Williams, 93, passed away peacefully in his home Jan. 3, 2014 in Porterville, Calif. where he had lived for the past 4 years. He was born to Floris and Mary Vic Shannon Williams in Oakland, Calif. on Nov. 3, 1920 and had an idyllic childhood in Marin County, where he wandered the hills of Kentfield. The Depression brought the family to San Francisco where Jim began building radios as a teen. This led to his life-long fascination of all things electronic. He graduated from UC Berkeley in engineering in 1944 and moved to Schenectady, N.Y. to work for General Electric in the field of aeronautics. His weekends were spent with a local hiking/skiing club enjoying the out of doors. He met his future wife, Marion Isabel Davis, during these outings, and they married in 1950. Jim and Marion moved to Lancaster, Calif. in 1952 where Jim worked in experimental jet engines with General Electric at Edwards Air Force Base. In 1952 they had a daughter, Sandra and in 1956 another daughter, Betsey. Jim was an avid family man who demonstrated his love through kindness and wit. He was known to argue forcefully for one side of a topic before dinner and then sit down to be a congenial table companion. As a community member, he was involved in the Lancaster Lions Club, 4-H, Computer Club, many bridge and camping clubs, and the Historical Society of Antelope Valley (Newsletter Editor for several years). He enjoyed sharing his love of gardening, hiking, geology, woodworking and technical expertise with his family and friends. After 40 years at GE, Jim retired to spend more time traveling, making new friends and learning Spanish. He had become quite a computer whiz and taught many others about the computer. In total, Jim lived almost 60 years in Lancaster before moving in with his daughter in Porterville, Calif. He continued to be involved in the computer and remained up to date in world news and all fields of science and engineering by reading many papers and technical magazines. Jim is preceded in death by his wife Marion and daughter Betsey Ann Williams. He is survived by his daughter Sandra Williams of Porterville, Calif.; godsons, Francisco and Erik Escalera, and many friends. A memorial service will take place at 2 pm, Sat., Jan. 18, 2014 in Lancaster, CA. For more information, please call Sandra (559) 781-4939
