TIGHE, James M
TIGHE, James M. Born November 25, 1930 in Bronx, NY. Passed away peacefully on November 15, 2013 in Lancaster, Calif. Son of the late Thomas and Catherine (Farrell), brother of John and the late Thomas Tighe. A devoted husband of 49 years to the late Rosemary (McKeegan), loving father of James Jr (Judith), Michael (Barbara), Kathleen Ball (Bruce), Maureen Tighe (Bradley) and Tricia Tighe (Daniel), beloved grandfather to Steven, Christopher and Ryan and great grandfather to Clara. The son of Irish immigrants, Jim served in the Air Force as part of the Strategic Air Command during the Korean War following which he received his BS from New York University and Masters in Engineering from Drexel University. He was a retired Vice President for Eastman Kodak with 30 years of experience and had leadership roles in developing nuclear tipped missiles, spy satellites, satellite to satellite communication using lasers, as well as developing the first camera/lens system that took detailed pictures of the moon in preparation for the lunar landing and the historic first photo of Earth from Deep Space. Four of the projects on which he worked are displayed in the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum. A man of exceptional character, Jim had a combination of humility, intelligence and practicality. He had a thirst for knowledge, was a voracious reader and an eternal student. Jim inspired all who knew him to imagine, to challenge and to discover and his career advice and encouragement were turning points in the lives of many young people. He will always be remembered lovingly, by his family for his kindness and generosity and for being actively involved in their lives as demonstrated by leadership roles in Little League, Boy Scouts and Y Indian Guides and for sharing his love of reading, boating, fishing and photography. Throughout his life Jim played an active role in the Rochester, NY and Pomona, Calif. Lions Club and was awarded the Melvin Jones Fellow Award Ð one of the highest honors bestowed by the Lions. Rest in Peace Jim Tighe - You made a difference! A funeral mass will be celebrated Saturday, Nov. 23, 2013 at 10 am, at Sacred Heart Church, 565 West Kettering St., Lancaster, Calif. immediately followed by a graveside interment at Good Shepard Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, tax deductible memorial donations may be made to Pomona Host Lions Charities, Inc., PO Box 3085,Pomona, CA 91769.
