STEVENS, Evert Edwin
STEVENS, Evert Edwin 77, of Rosamond, California died Tuesday, June 4, 2013, at his home after a two-year battle with esophageal cancer. Evert (also known as Ed) was born on October 29, 1935, in Corcoran, California to Millie and Valo Stevens of Earlimart, California. He was a multi-sport letterman at Delano High School and then pursued both sports at Fresno State College. After receiving his college degree, Ed went into teaching and coaching. His coaching path led him to Corcoran High School as head football coach in the mid-1960s. There he worked with assistant coach Arthur Calloway who facilitated a meeting withlegendary football coach Eddie Robinson. This meeting led to a 18-year coaching career for Ed with the Grambling State University Tigers in Louisiana where he waslinebacker, film coach and weight training coach and where he established a womans track team that quickly became nationally competitive and going on to win national champion ships. In 1987, Evert returned to his roots in Cali- fornia and taught and coached at the high school and junior college level, including Mojave High School and most recently California City High School wherehe helped lead the track teams to the schools first league championships in any sport. It came as no surprise to his family and friends that Evert continued to hold his illness at bay until after the end of this years track season. In addition to the wonderful friends and athletes who have loved him during his 77 years, survivors include Everts wife of 28 years, Verone Stevens of Rosamond, Calif; son, Christopher Stevens of Pinon Hills, Calif.; daughters: Brenda Stevens Ryan of Austin, Texas; husband Michael and two sons, Daniel and Kevin; Mindy Stevens Lewis of Austin, Texas, husband Rick and four children, Andi, Sydney, Bryn and Tucker; Marianne Stevens Leclerc of Dallas, Texas, husband Francois and daughter CŽcile. Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, July 13, 2013, at Joshua Memorial Park & Mortuary in Lancaster, California.
