MEAD, Stella E.
MEAD, Stella E. Was born in Northern Ohio on May 6, 1907, and had a sister and brother, both now deceased. She had her 106th birthday this month. She was married three times and buried all husbands. Her first marriage was to Lee Routson, who brought her to California in the early 1950s, so he could work at Edwards Air Force Base. They were married 38 years. Her second marriage was to Ernest 'Mike' Harris. Her third marriage was to Levi Mead, but was cut short by an automobile accident in which Stella was injured. From her third marriage she gained four step-children, Maxine Fricke of Oregon, Marvin (Shirley), Melvin (Deloris) and Junior (deceased) wife Sally of Wyoming. She is also survived by nieces and nephews in Ohio and California. Her working career was as a bank teller in many banks and savings and loans in Lancaster. She belonged to the American Legion Auxiliary for 69 years and held all offices. She was active in selling their poppies to the public as well as observing Memorial and Veterans days. She was a devout Catholic. She became blind in the early 1990s and appreciated all those who helped her remain active, especially those who took her to and from church. She is survived by her step-children and step-grandchildren, nieces and nephews and special friends in Lancaster, Dorothy Mercer and Veronica McGough (deceased). Her care giver, Terri Winters, has taken care of Stella in her home for almost four years. Vigil will be held at 7 p.m., Thursday, May 16, 2013, at Mumaw Funeral Home, (Date and Newgrove) Lancaster. Please come and share your memories. Burial will be in Fresno beside her first husband, Lee Routson. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to American Legion Auxiliary #311, P.O. Box 2144, Lancaster, CA 93590. A Mass will be given by Father Leo at at 10 a.m., Friday, May 17, 2013, at Blessed Junipero Serra Parish. Many thanks to the Catholic Daughters and Hoffman Hospice.
