LEVITT, Dorothy Elizabeth Sane
LEVITT, Dorothy Elizabeth Sanem Dorothy Levitt, beloved teacher, writer, wife, mother and grandmother, passed away on January 4, 2013, in Palmdale, California after a long battle with Alzheimer's disease. She was born in Sioux City, Iowa on April 24, 1921, to Mary Elizabeth Bishop Sanem and Earl Grant Sanem. During World War II, she worked for the War Department breaking codes and ciphers. She helped Dr. Mildred Berry write her ground-breaking book on speech pathology. Dorothy was a teacher for many years, first in Depue, Illinois, and later at Saugus School, Gorman School, and Hughes-Elizabeth Lakes School (where she was Teacher of the Year and where she was asked to come out of retirement to teach math and other subjects in the gifted program). She was a long-time resident of Sandberg, California and lived on the old Sandberg Ranch. She was a member of SERVAS and hosted many foreign visitors. She completed four books of genealogy for both her and her husband's families. Dorothy was politically active, was a member of the California Teachers Association and helped unionization efforts. She became an authority on local birds and plants. She and her husband traveled the world. Dorothy is survived by her husband, Edward; their children, Geoffrey, Dan, and Paul; their grandchildren, Matthew, Dusty, Rachel, and Annie Heller; and her brother Robert Sanem. Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, January 19, 2013, at Eternal Valley Memorial Park, 23287 N. Sierra Highway, Newhall, CA 91321. (661) 259-0800.
