AUSTIN, Robert Owen
AUSTIN, Robert Owen Born June 6, 1938, died at his home in San Diego on Jan. 7, 2013. He lived in the Antelope Valley for over 50 years, and attended the Eastside Elementary School and Antelope Valley High School. As a child, he was involved in the Boy Scouts of America, advancing to Explorer Scouts, where he received the Silver Award, as well as Grange, where he was the first elected state youth committee chairman. His 42 year career included all aspects of pupil transportation; driving a school bus, directing a school transportation department, championing the creation of the first Joint Power student transportation agency, lobbying for school bus safety, consulting with districts throughout the state, and ultimately, teaching a driver training program at the State Department of Education. He was active in the Kiwanis Club, and was a past president of the California Association of School Transportation Officials (CASTO). He is survived by his brother, David of Deer Lodge, Mont., sister, Barbah of Delphi, Ind., sons, Brett of Quartz Hill, Calif., and Joe of San Diego, Calif., his daughter, Melissa of San Diego, Calif., and his grandchildren: Avery, Breanna, Kasey, Parker, Robert, Ryden, and Shyla. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m., Sunday, Jan. 20, 2013, in San Diego at Balboa Parks Recital Hall, 2150 Pan American Rd. West, San Diego, CA 92101. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to San Diego Hospice, 4311 Third Ave, San Diego, CA 92103, www.sdhospice.org in his memory.
