BARKER, Roderick Ward passed away on December 10, 2011 in Arcadia, Calif. He was born on July 19, 1927 in San Francisco, Calif. He enlisted in the United States Navy and served in Guam during World War II. After the war he returned to Omaha, Nebraska, where he met and married Betty Lou Wozniak. In 1956 the family moved to the San Gabriel Valley. Rod worked at the Herald-Examiner, Downey Southeast News, and Pasadena Independent/Star News as a display advertising salesman. At the Southeast News he also authored a regular column. He later moved to the Antelope Valley, working for many years at the Lancaster Ledger-Gazette and Antelope Valley Press, as well as KDOL Radio. He also served as secretary and newsletter editor for the Hi-Desert Mule Association, and helped to organize many of the annual Mule Day celebrations. A lifelong writer, he completed at least five book drafts in recent years. He leaves behind four children: Roxanne Barker, Julie (Anthony) Smith, Aimee (Bruce) Brazeau, and Rod Barker Jr.; five grandchildren: Mandy (Koby) Reynolds, Aaron Sotelo, Emilie Brazeau, Meagan Smith and Lulu Brazeau; and two great grandchildren, Graham and Quinn Reynolds. He will be remembered for his quick wit, keen curiosity and love of practical jokes. A memorial service will be held at Mater Dolorosa Retreat Center, 700 N. Sunnyside in Sierra Madre at 12 noon on December 30, 2011.
