Obituary Notices and Memorials

BOLEN, Joan Born July 4, 1917, died Sept. 20, 2011. Known for her love of God and her great generosity, Joan will be deeply missed by her family and friends. She was a woman of courage and determination, and drew on a solid foundation of Christian values to overcome hardship and come out smiling. She grew up during the Great Depression, one of seven children of Anthony and Helen Anshaw. They all worked together for the family's survival. She married Bob Bolen in 1939, and they raised 4 children, Tim Bolen, Mary Jo Saylor, Bob Bolen Jr., and Ed Bolen, sending them all through Catholic schools. She was a devoted and hardworking member of Sacred Heart Parish for 45 years. She worked for the District Attorney's Office in Lancaster until she retired. She loved to paint, and produced a gallery of beautiful oils, when she wasn't busy spoiling her grandchildren, David Rivas Jr., Jennifer Bolen, Joseph Rivas, Russell Bolen, Daniel Rivas, Randy Bolen, Melinda Rivas Davies, and Brian Bolen. She was a woman who cared personally for every person she met, even the ones she didn't like, and never lost her sense of humor at the ridiculousness that life can hand out. Vigil service will be held from 4 to 8 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 29, 2011, at Halley-Olsen- Murphy, Lancaster. Funeral Mass will be at 9 a.m., Friday, Sept. 30, 2011, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church.
